CORA — Family Centered Mental Health

CORA is an organization dedicated to helping the community overcome relationship abuse and provide help and comfort. The family-centered project focuses on helping 0-5 year old children heal from the trauma of witnessing intimate partner abuse by using various activities to strengthen family bonds and facilitate relationships.

The event takes place in a small room at the local library in Half Moon Bay on a Tuesday afternoon. The three families had all sat down and started working on their "family scrapbook," using stickers, pens, and their own printed family pictures to create a little memory book.

The mother turned her head slightly and looked at the girl who was still holding the glue bottle. Her hand reached out and gently wiped the crumbs from the corner of the girl's mouth as she cleaned a treasure that would break at the slightest touch. The corners of her mouth lifted in response to her daughter's continued senseless mischief as she continued to look down and cut out the picture of her holding her still infant daughter.

With my thumb rubbing against the camera case, I watched the family’s backs slowly disappear into the doorway. Their identity may have been that of hysterical companions to each other, but they were also at the same time the best mother and father this sweet girl could have had.
