The Fire From Paradise
“The Camp Fire in November, 2018, lasted eighteen days. It killed 85 people, and destroyed 18,804 structures in the town of Paradise.”
As a new middle schooler to the United States, just stepping into the remains of this town shook me to my core. Scorched blackness interspersed with familiar household items, vehicles melted into monstrosities still pointing in the direction of gas stations. The glass lampshade on the orchard fence became one of the very few surviving witnesses, and the mist of water that rose might as well have been the light of a shallow tear.
Standing in the center of the blackness with my camera in hand, I am the rabbit ring that quietly proclaims, “I don't belong here”.
